On August 27, 2020, Women in Big Data hosted Dipti Borkar, cofounder and chief product officer at Ahana, to talk about Presto technology.  It was a very educational session with great engagement and questions.

Dipti started by sharing her career journey and how she co-founded Ahana, a Presto company. After beginning her career at IBM as a software engineer and development manager for the DB2 server team, she has worked in a number of deep database technologies, including Couchbase (holding leadership positions in solutions engineering, product, and product marketing), Kinetica (VP Product Marketing), and Alluxio (VP of Product).

Then, Dipti introduced the Presto technology. Presto is a widely adopted, open source, distributed SQL engine for federated querying across multiple data sources. With Presto, you can perform ad hoc querying of data in place, which helps solve challenges around time to discover and the amount of time it takes to do ad hoc analysis.

Dipti spoke about why Presto is becoming so popular, with companies like Facebook, Uber, Twitter, Alibaba, and many more, using Presto for interactive ad hoc queries, reporting and dashboarding, and data lake analytics.

Dipti closed the session by sharing few links to get started with Presto: Docker Sandbox for Presto and AWS Sandbox AMI for Presto. She also invited the audience to join the upcoming PrestoCon virtual event on Sept 24, and even provided a free pass to the session!. WiBD members and attendees can use code PRESTO20WIBD. Dipti generously provided her email dipti@ahana.io for any follow up and questions including job opportunities at Ahana.

Bio: Dipti Borkar is the Cofounder and Chief Product Officer at Ahana, the Presto company. She has over 15 years of experience in data and database technology across relational and non-relational. At Couchbase she held several leadership positions, including Head of Global Technical Sales and Head of Product Management. Earlier in her career Dipti managed development teams at IBM DB2, where she started her career as a database software engineer.
