Anushka Singh just wrapped up an internship at Verizon Media over the summer as an Openstack SDE Intern and is kicking off back to school for her final semester as a Computer Science engineering student at the University of Southern California (USC) Viterbi School of Engineering in Los Angeles. She will graduate in Dec, 2020. At Verizon Media, Anushka built skills with seven tools that she did not have the opportunity to learn in the classroom: IRC, Gerrit, Python, Openstack, Screwdriver, Zuul, and Stackalytics. While she did have some experience in Python in her engineering grad program, it was far more applied on the job.
Through her role as the engineering school campus liaison for Women in Big Data (WiBD) Southern California “So Cal,” Anushka has worked to promote opportunities to her school community through social channels amongst peers, participated in several monthly chapter events, contributed to networking events and virtual happy hours, and volunteered as a trainer for a WiBD West Coast effort. Her training experience was charged by WiBD, in collaboration with SAP and AWS, in a program to debug, fix and teach a Machine Learning tutorial on SageMaker + HANA for a diverse group of 70 data science enthusiasts. This service earned Anushka recognition as the WiBD Instructor of the year for 2019. Anushka reports this service experience as a true highlight. She can clearly see how her training experience, which included excellent tools, along with the award, will impact her resume as well as her career for life: employers appreciate not just a candidate with strong tech skills, but one that can also teach.
Through WiBD So Cal, Anushka has built strong mentor relationships with other co-leads that have more seasoned work experience. She’s benefited from great advice on all types of professional topics, including public speaking, networking, leadership, organizing events and tech trainings. This is advice that one can’t always find on the job or in the classroom!
Anushka has had several key experiences that built her career to date, including serving as a Project Manager, Workday Analyst, Marketing Intern and Graduate Student ambassador. She has participated in (and won accolades for) hackathons and is passionate about all things Data Science. Her long-term career goal is to lead the construction of optimized, sustainable and scalable solutions in solving problems faced by the human race in the 21st century, in real world domains such as health, education, transportation and energy, using technologies like Big Data Analytics, Machine Learning, AI and Software Engineering. Understanding the impact of newer technologies today has motivated her to work towards becoming proficient in data science and software.
Anushka is originally from Mumbai, India. She is passionate about teaching and service, and she enjoys volunteering at organizations like Red Cross and Jumpstart. Beaches and books are her go-to therapy. She absolutely loves meeting new people and getting to know their life stories! She loves travelling and is constantly on the lookout for the next road trip! 😀
She will also be attending Grace Hopper Conference (GHC) 2020 this year for the first time ever! Please feel free to reach out to her at GHC if you are attending and show some support, love and encouragement or on any of the links mentioned below!
