Women in Big Data, collaborating with DataCamp Donates, hosted our monthly event to showcase the progress of our DataCamp Donates participants and provide them with supplementary information.

Special thanks to our guest speaker, Amney Mounir, Founder of Dataford.io. This insightful workshop was tailored for women aiming to pivot into the field of data analytics, regardless of their prior experience.

During the session, attendees delved into key pillars of professional advancement, including invaluable insights into the interview process, effective resume enhancement strategies, expert advice on maximizing LinkedIn for securing more interview opportunities, and navigating technical screenings with confidence.

The interview process to land a job in Data Analytics

The journey through the interview process in Data Analytics is multifaceted, encompassing five distinct stages. It all commences with the foundational step of crafting an attention-grabbing resume, strategically infused with pertinent keywords to navigate recruiter filters seamlessly.

Transitioning to the initial phone call with the recruiter, candidates must be armed with a succinct sales pitch to make a lasting impression within a brief 30-second window. This pivotal moment offers the opportunity to introduce oneself, highlight key accomplishments, and express genuine enthusiasm for the prospective role and company ethos.

Advancing to the technical interview phase, candidates are rigorously assessed on their proficiency in problem-solving and coding challenges, setting the stage for further evaluation. Subsequently, candidates may encounter a take-home assignment, with select companies opting to compensate candidates for their time invested.

For certain organizations, the next-to-last stage entails an immersive on-site interview, delving deeper into candidates’ business acumen and behavioral attributes. Here, practical demonstrations of technical prowess, such as SQL or Python proficiency, serve as a cornerstone for assessment.

In the final stage, candidates navigate the job offer negotiation process to ensure alignment with their career aspirations. In the event of a rejection, proactive solicitation of feedback serves as a valuable tool for personal growth, fostering transparency and mutual respect in the candidate-employer relationship.

How to improve your resume and land more interviews?

According to a survey by Amney Mounir, recruiters often spend just 2 to 3 minutes scanning a resume during their busy day. That’s why your summary is crucial—it’s your chance to pitch yourself effectively in a concise manner.

Make sure your summary hits the mark by highlighting your top achievements, listed in order of importance, and tailored to the specific job you’re after. Keep it short, ideally within three lines, and include your areas of expertise, relevant experience, projects, and volunteer work.

Don’t forget to quantify your achievements with actual metrics whenever possible. For instance, you could say something like, “Oversaw 50+ experiments and enhancements, leading to substantial improvements in key business metrics.” Adding numbers adds credibility and showcases your impact.

Land more interviews with Linkedin

If many companies don’t post jobs on LinkedIn due to budget constraints, you can still tap into the platform’s potential by using its search bar and seeking referrals.

To maximize your search, input relevant keywords followed by “and” in the search bar. For example, type “hiring” AND “us” AND “data analyst” to filter posts containing these terms, then sort by newest posts. Once you’ve identified potential opportunities, reach out directly to the hiring manager—just be sure to vet the company to avoid scams.

A useful tip is to focus on roles with fewer than 30 applicants, increasing your chances of standing out. Additionally, explore the “People” section of the company’s LinkedIn page to identify mutual contacts who could provide referrals. Don’t hesitate to request referrals—it’s a proven way to boost your chances of landing the job.
