Different Strokes for Data Folks

September 26, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Hosted by Lilian L., Women in Big Data Toronto

How is big data used in different industries? With the explosion of data, many companies are finding ways to make use of big data, from using it to make more data-informed strategic decisions to creating a catered experience for their customers.

In this session, we are featuring three data professionals to speak about their application of big data in their own industry: technology, financial institution and information management. This session is generously sponsored by Kx and Quandl. We are thrilled to see you there!

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the concept of connected objects and devices, including cell phones, televisions, fitness trackers, automobiles, and jet engines. Many analysts predict that there will be over 20 billion connected devices by 2020. These devices are equipped with sensors that capture information about the device, service, weather, location, vibration and more. A Kx engineer will be presenting on the rise of sensor data and how kdb+, the world’s fastest time series database, handles the vast amounts of data.

Zahra Zahid leads the Modern Data Architecture and AI practice for Slalom Canada. In this session, she will be speaking about modern data architecture, a shift in approach to developing technology architectures to overcome today’s information management challenges. This approach focuses on leveraging a broader selection of tools, tailored to overcome specific challenges such as streaming data, micro-batch or near real-time, large data quantities, unstructured data, and machine learning.

Sridevi Baskaran, a Data Scientist at Scotiabank, will be presenting on how a predictive model built with mobile app data are used to help customers reduce their chances of missing bill payments. She will dive deep into the algorithm and probabilistic models used in this project. Prior to her role at a financial institution, Sridevi obtained her Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from McMaster University, with her thesis on Ontology Functional Dependencies.

Since the company’s inception, Kx’s singular goal has been to provide its customers with the fastest, most efficient, and most flexible tools for processing real-time and historical data. This focus has enabled them to become the worldwide leader of in-memory, time-series databases. Learn more about Kx here: www.kx.com

Quandl’s mission is to extract value from the world’s data. They want to inspire customers to make new discoveries and incorporate them into trading strategies. They find opportunities in places people otherwise wouldn’t think about. Quandl is listed as a Fintech 50 company in 2018. Learn more about Quandl here: www.quandl.com
