NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR: 2021-2022 Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab: Ethical Challenges of AI in Biomedicine

September 16, 2021 @ 8:00 am - January 31, 2022 @ 11:59 pm EDT

The Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab (BDSIL) at University of Virginia is seeking applications for the 2021-2022 Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab: Ethical Challenges of AI in Biomedicine!

The 2021-2022 BDSIL is a free, year-long, intensive academic workshop program (virtual and in-person components) designed to foster the development of multidisciplinary teams. This facilitated and mentored workshop will tackle the challenges of ethically working with datatypes in support of AI systems and how AI might be made ethical against best practice recommendations. It is anticipated that teams formed during the event will result in new peer-reviewed publications or NIH/NSF grant proposals to further develop original research project ideas.

We are inviting US-based researchers at the late-stage postdoctoral and early-stage junior faculty level working in the quantitative and data sciences and the biomedical fields to apply. We will be accepting applications on a rolling basis thru January 31, 2022 at 11:59 PM ET. Competitively selected participants will take part in a series of regularly scheduled online activities beginning winter 2021, participate in a series of team building activities, engage with senior faculty mentors, and enjoy presentations by leading bioethics and data science experts, all of which will culminate in a 5-day mentored and facilitated project development workshop to be held in historic Charlottesville, Virginia from June 13-17, 2022.  During the BDSIL workshop, multidisciplinary teams will craft new research projects and develop them as NIH/NSF grant submissions.  For more information about the 2021-2022 Biomedical Data Science Innovation Lab, please visit http://innovation.lab.virginia.edu/.
