A heartfelt thank you to the four outstanding senior technology leaders, Josephine Porrazzo, PhD, Surekha Reddy, Aruna Nadesan and Diane Chan, PMP, CSM, SA, who joined us on April 15 as guest speakers for the Women in Big Data Senior Technology Circle peer group session!

In a lively and thought-provoking conversation, our guest panelists shared the diverse career journeys that shaped their paths to senior leadership. From navigating transitions to seizing high-risk opportunities, their stories highlighted the power of curiosity, problem-solving, and community building as essential tools for long-term success.

One panelist spoke about how understanding data reveals how the world is organized, underscoring the importance of analytical thinking in informed leadership. Another shared how her broad interests—spanning technology, team leadership, talent development, and business acumen—unknowingly prepared her to lead a technology-focused entrepreneurial organization.

We heard from a panelist who made a bold pivot early in her career, moving from a stable job to a high-risk role. That leap provided invaluable market and customer exposure and became instrumental in cultivating her entrepreneurial mindset. Another emphasized the importance of developing a “can do” attitude, which builds resilience and empowers individuals to carve their own path through ambiguity and change.

An especially compelling theme was the balancing act senior leaders must perform—maintaining a pulse on technical details while also operating with strategic vision. Choosing the right lens—whether strategic or execution-focused—was also discussed as a crucial leadership skill.

Throughout the session, the panelists spoke passionately about the value of volunteering and paying it forward. Many credited their leadership growth to experiences launching or guiding community initiatives, which broadened their influence and expanded their networks with new resources and opportunities.
