At the University of Minnesota, the Data Engineer responds to requests from users for new or modified data connectivity systems.  These may involve planning, designing, analyzing, architecting, modeling, programming, and modifying various applications, interfaces, and datasets.  The Data Engineer develops and maintains integrations via batch files as well as web services (APIs, Boomi), especially to ERP systems.

Responsibilities include the design, build, implementation, and maintenance of data processing channels for data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) to connect large data sets from a variety of sources. Develop, maintain, and use infrastructure solutions (e.g., data warehouses, data lakes) including data access APIs that transform data into a usable format enabling users to consume and analyze data more efficiently. Prepares and manipulates data using tools, languages, data processing frameworks, and databases.

The Data Engineer leads the USIS practice for an Enterprise University Services IT team that is responsible for analysis, installation, configuration, maintenance, an advanced support of University Services software and BI systems.  Applications include SAP Business Objects, Webi, Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE), and several internally-developed software programs. Other duties include data modeling, data analysis, and ETL, report, and dashboard development for Business Intelligence systems.

Under limited supervision, this position will perform data engineering analysis and implementation tasks for a wide range of applications and projects across University Services, including the departments of:  Space, PSRE, FM, CPM, SFP, UHS, DPS, Sustainability, and Finance.  These groups span all campuses across the UofM system.  Occasionally, report development or DBA work will be needed by this role as well.

The candidate will work within the University Services Information Services team to support business initiatives, projects, and 24x7x365 day-to-day operational support needs (including on-call) that arise. This position will work with DBA’s, Systems Engineers, Systems Support, and Business Analysts within the various business units served and the Office of Information Technology.

Major activities will include identifying, proposing, modifying, and developing information systems solutions; backup support for Oracle Databases, creating formal analytic and design documents; analytic and programming support (e.g. PHP, JSP, SQL, PL/SQL); recording and analyzing business requirements; and providing technical assistance as needed. The position requires contact with business staff, IT staff, and unit management.  The role will follow ITIL best practices of service desk and change management.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field and at least four (4) years experience as an IT professional or master's degree and two (2) years of experience. Knowledge of and experience with:  systems analysis methods and techniques, knowledge of different platforms, experience writing scripts, strong knowledge of modern Operating Systems.  Demonstrated strong customer-relationship skills, ability to prepare effective oral and written reports, and the ability to assist less experienced technical staff and non-technical staff with IT issues.  Ability to lift 50 lbs.
