WHAT YOU’LL DO
As Senior Manager of Data Engineering, you will lead a team of data engineers who will solve cutting-edge problems for a variety of industries and collaborate daily as part of the Global Engineering leadership team. As a member of a diverse engineering team, you will participate in the full engineering life cycle which includes designing, developing, optimizing, and deploying new software solutions and infrastructure for world’s largest companies.
Core Responsibilities and Requirements
•   Lead and continue to build out a team of Data Engineers in the region, including recruiting, supervision, mentoring, planning and executing on strategy.
•   Establish and implement state-of-art data engineering standards, tools, and techniques across the team
•   Partner with Data Science, Machine Learning, and Platform Engineering teams to develop and deploy production quality code
•   Develop and champion modern Data Engineering concepts to technical and business stakeholders
•   Implement new and innovative deployment techniques, tooling, and infrastructure automation within Bain and with our clients
•   Collaborate closely with and influence business consulting staff and leaders as part of multi-disciplinary teams to assess opportunities and develop data driven solutions for Bain clients across a variety of sectors
•   Collaborate with leaders of other data expertise tracks – Data Science, Marketing Science, Operations Research and Primary Research to ensure Bain and Global Engineering are bringing the optimal combination of expertise to deliver results for our clients
•   Travel is required (20%) - post-pandemic
Lead Bain’s Global Engineering Data team in EMEA (60%)
•   Develop the organizational design and career development for Data Engineers towards the execution of above strategy and vision;
•   Lead recruiting efforts in region and onboarding team members;
•   Directly supervise team members in the region and be responsible for guiding their professional development;
•   Set standards and guidelines for team to develop re-usable common frameworks, model and components that address repeatable tasks and problem/data sets in specific industries or business functions
•   Co-lead the development and maintenance of Global Engineering’s analytics infrastructure
•   Act as an ambassador and coach towards global teams at our clients and partners to raise their capabilities and ensure that our work is successfully deployed
•   Translate business requirements into technical requirements and implementation details
•   Champion next generation data architecture strategies in data pipeline, analysis, and storage solutions.
Develop infrastructure and deployment platform to enable production data science and machine learning engineering development (20%)
•   Participate in the full software development life cycle including designing distributed systems, writing documentation and unit/integration tests, and conducting code reviews.
•   Develop and improve infrastructure including CI/CD, microservice frameworks, distributed computing, and cloud infrastructure needed to support this platform.
•   Design and develop frameworks to automate data ingestion, analysis, visualization, and integration of structured and unstructured data from a variety of data sources.
Provide technical guidance to external clients and internal stakeholders in Bain (20%)
•   Explore new technical innovations in the machine learning and data engineering to improve customer results.
•   Advise and coach engineering teams on technology stack best practices and operational models to raise their data engineering capabilities.
•   Influence, educate and directly support the data engineering capabilities of our clients, often at the executive level.
ABOUT YOU
•   Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field.
•   At least two years at engineering manager level with experience of recruiting, performance development and mentoring
•   A good understanding of project management techniques such as Agile and Kanban, and ability to apply these techniques to project work
•   Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain and discuss complex mathematical and machine learning technicalities with colleagues and clients from other disciplines at their level of cognition
•   Over four years of practical experience programming with Python, R, Java or similar data-orientated programming language.
•   Four years of experience with structured and unstructured database technologies
•   Two years of experience developing solutions on cloud infrastructure and associated understanding of failover, high-availability, and scalability.
•   Curiosity, proactivity and critical thinking.
 Preferred qualifications:
•   Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical field
•   Continuous Integration and Deployment pipelines, “Infrastructure as Code” technology and containerization. For example, practical experience of Git workflows, Github Actions and Terraform
•   Scaling and optimizing schema and performance tuning data pipelines including orchestration frameworks.
•   Experience with administering and managing and designing clusters. For example, practical experience of Kubernetes and Helm.
•   Experience of the data engineering ecosystem including developing Jupyter notebooks, Numpy, PyTorch and Tensorflow

WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
Bain’s Global Engineering leads the firm’s software development efforts and defines engineering standards for Bain globally. The team ships software solutions to address client and internal needs, ranging from iterative prototypes to enterprise-grade production software.
This position will be in London, Berlin or Munich.
