On August 5th, 2020 St. Louis Chapter members participated in the Young Women Career Day activity sponsored by Ameren WISE (Women Influencing Success in Energy).

The WISE sponsored career day was a virtual activity that showcased various career options available in the Energy and Utilities industry. Approximately 30 students participated in the event. The WIBD team’s aim was to educate and inspire middle school, high school and college students to pursue a career in Data and Analytics.

Vidyalaksmi Iyer and Sowmya Bommakanti addressed one group of students, explaining their how their careers had progressed and talking about the importance of accessing and visualizing data. This was followed by an interactive SQL activity designed to explain how to write queries, as well as by a visualization demo on the data.

Usha Ramalingam and Shunfang Hou addressed another group of students by first outlining their career paths and then explaining the importance of machine learning techniques and their uses. This was followed by a hands-on activity of creating a sample dataset to train a model and then testing the predictions.

The event was well received by the students and WISE coordinators.
