The Women in Big Data (WiBD) Spring Hackathon 2024 was a resounding success, running from April 9th to June 1st under the leadership of WiBD hackathon director Rupa Gangatirkar. This event provided an incredible opportunity for participants to engage with the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide 2024 Datathon on Kaggle. Teams were tasked with a significant challenge: predicting the time it takes for patients to receive a metastatic cancer diagnosis using a unique oncology dataset from Gilead Sciences. Additionally, teams conducted deep analyses on how climate patterns impact access to healthcare.

Participating Chapters and Leads

Three chapters participated in this inspiring journey:

Throughout the hackathon, the chapters were guided and coordinated by WiBD Hackathon Agile Coach, Deanna Hsu.

  • St. Louis Chapter: Despite facing numerous setbacks and participant dropouts, the team showed remarkable perseverance to complete the challenge on time.
  • Bay Area Chapter: A diverse mix of university students, professionals, and data enthusiasts who brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the competition.

All three chapters concluded the hackathon on a high note, finishing in the top 5% of the global ranking on Kaggle.

We held the closing session and celebration on June 21st, where all teams shared their hackathon journeys, learnings, and experiences.
